How to Study and Remember a Master Game

Master games show how strong players build positions, attack, defend, and convert advantages.

Practice method

Choose one game and pause before a critical move. Identify threats, candidate moves and the plan you expect the player to follow. Compare your choice with the historical move, then replay the line from memory. Use player and event details to keep the source clear without treating reputation as proof of correctness.

Avoid this habit

Clicking through a game without asking questions can feel productive while leaving little recall. Focus on a few instructive decisions and revisit them; a remembered move is more useful when you can explain what it changed.

Training goal

Absorb good chess patterns from real high-level games.
