Clearance Sacrifice
A clearance sacrifice moves one of your pieces off a needed square or line and deliberately gives it up so another piece can use that space.
What to look for
Look for a blocked file, rank, diagonal, or key square near the king where sacrificing the blocker opens the attack.
Recognize the mechanism
Find the line or destination needed by a second attacking piece. Calculate a sacrifice that vacates that space, including the possibility that the defender declines it. The opened route must justify the material investment.
Common practical mistake
Giving material without making a required square or line available is not this mechanism. Identify the beneficiary before considering the sacrifice.
Training goal
Learn to value open lines and key squares more than the sacrificed material.
