Hanging Piece
A hanging piece can be taken without an adequate tactical reply, usually because it is undefended or its defenders cannot recapture safely.
What to look for
Scan for loose pieces, especially after forcing moves like checks and captures.
Recognize the mechanism
Scan the opponent’s loose pieces after every forcing move. Check not only visible defenders but whether their recaptures are legal and tactically safe. A simple capture can be the best move if there is no adequate reply.
Common practical mistake
Undefended does not always mean free. A mating threat, intermediate check or trapped capturing piece may outweigh the apparent gain.
