Skewer
A skewer attacks a valuable or critical piece in front. When that piece moves, a second target behind it becomes exposed.
What to look for
Look for lined-up king, queen, rook, or bishop targets on open files, ranks, and diagonals.
Recognize the mechanism
Identify the front target and the second target behind it. Calculate the front piece’s best escape and whether the rear target remains available afterward. The order of the targets distinguishes this idea from a pin.
Common practical mistake
Do not label any capture of a valuable piece a skewer. The line attack and the exposed rear target must do the tactical work.

Recognize line attacks where the front piece is forced to move.
