Zwischencheck
A zwischencheck is an in-between check played before the expected recapture or reply. Use the check's tempo, then return to the original tactical sequence.
What to look for
Before making the expected move, check whether an immediate check improves your position or changes the move order.
Recognize the mechanism
When a recapture looks automatic, scan for a check first. The check may force the king or defender to a worse square before you return to the original exchange. Count the material only after the complete sequence.
Common practical mistake
Do not insert a check merely because it is available. If it helps the opponent escape or loses the original target, it may spoil the combination.

Train the habit of checking for a stronger intermediate check before an automatic reply.
